MarGal Port and Harbour Approach Demonstration, 27th September 2005

Invitation

On the 27th September in Harwich, UK, the General Lighthouse Authorities (GLAs) of the United Kingdom and Ireland will be demonstrating port and harbour-approaches using EGNOS and the marine Automatic Identification System (AIS) to raise awareness of the potential of Galileo in the maritime sector.

MarGal (Maritime use of Galileo) is one of the projects of the 6th Framework Programme for Research and Technology Development and funded by the Galileo Joint Undertaking. This is the second of two MarGal consortium demonstrations and complements the first, which focuses on ‘calamity abatement’ for inland waterways.

Radionavigation services are an increasingly important component in the aid-to-navigation mix provided by the GLAs and equivalent organisations world-wide.  Europe is developing the Galileo satellite navigation system to provide independent, interoperable, civil-controlled services with guaranteed reliability. The introduction of new Galileo services has the potential:

  • to reduce system vulnerability,
  • to improve availability and accuracy, and
  • to support introduction of new operations

During the demonstration two vessels, the THV Mermaid and the THV Ready, will undertake controlled harbour approaches highlighting improved efficiency for both the vessel and the port.  This demonstration will be supported by presentations giving insight into the Galileo programme, the MarGal project and the potential benefits of Galileo to the maritime sector.

Attending this important demonstration will provide you with:

  • an understanding of the economic benefits to port authorities and vessel owners,
  • an insight into the potential of Galileo in the maritime sector, and
  • a unique opportunity to network with leading figures in the maritime and Galileo sectors

There are also optional tours around Trinity House’s new offices and the GLA vessels involved (please bring photographic identification) following the demonstration.
